What is the difference between NiCd, NiMH, and Lithium-based Rechargeable Batteries?

NiCd refers to Nickel Cadmium and NiMH refers to Nickel-metal Hydride. NiMH batteries are the superior battery as they have higher capacity, no memory effects, and are environmentally friendly. Since NiMH batteries have twice the capacity of NiCd batteries, they'll have much longer run time (more hours of music or more pictures) before needing recharged.

Lithium-based (such as Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer batteries) stand out because they store a lot more energy than NiCd or NiMH batteries. For example, our Li-Poly 9V battery has a capacity of 720 mAh and our NiMH version has a capacity of 250 mAh, which is why many of our customers love these for high-drain applications like wireless microphones and guitar pedals.

Are NiMH rechargeable batteries better for some applications over alkaline batteries?

For high-drain electronics, like digital cameras, NiMH and Lithium-based rechargeable batteries will run much longer than alkaline batteries. You might even see a three to four times increase on a single charge. Alkaline batteries are better suited for lower drain applications like remote controls and clocks.
