Optimizing Your Battery Life
Scooter and electric bike batteries should be checked on a regular basis to ensure that your ride is ready to start and perform the way you expect. If you are leaving your scooter for any period greater than a couple of weeks without riding, it's a good idea to get a battery charger to keep your battery in optimal condition.
If your scooter will not start, checking your battery's voltage is a good starting point. Periodic maintenance and checking can keep your battery fully charged and ready to use. Many scooter owners are cautious to maintain or charge their battery because it can be in an awkward location. If you are unsure about the proper care it might be time to get out the manual.
A few minutes of monthly maintenance should keep your battery working perfectly and help to ensure a long battery life. Keep your scooter battery charged to 100% to avoid a dead battery when you are riding. If the lights dim, your horn sounds weak, the starter appears weak, or the battery hasn't been used in more than two weeks it probably needs to be brought back up to a full charge with the correct battery charger.
Battery Charging Safety
To properly connect the charger to the scooter battery connect the positive charger lead to the positive battery post then the negative charger lead to the negative battery post. Make sure you unplug the charger or turn it off before you disconnect all the battery leads to cut down on the chance of sparks. The positive terminal is red or marked with a +. The negative terminal is black or marked with a -.
Charge your battery in a well ventilated area. A buildup of hydrogen and oxygen in the battery or in the charging area can create an explosion hazard.
If your scooter battery feels hot to the touch while it is connected to the charge during a charging cycle immediately stop the charging process. Allow the battery to cool before you try to charge it again.
