Product Description
Are you tired of your lead-acid battery dying over winter, only to leave you cranking away on a cold morning? The Shorai LFM24A3-BS12 is a direct drop-in lithium iron upgrade built to solve exactly that problem. At just 3.97 lbs and 360 cold cranking amps, it delivers serious starting power in a package your stock battery could never match.
The LFM24A3-BS12 is rated at 8 Ah, equivalent to a 24 Ah lead-acid battery, meaning it's engineered to handle the same real-world cranking demands as the OEM battery it replaces. And unlike lead-acid, it will not sulfate sitting in your garage all winter.
A Proven Fit for Popular Cruisers and Tourers
This battery is the preferred lithium upgrade for owners of larger-displacement bikes that take a YB16-B or equivalent. It's a commonly used battery in the Harley-Davidson Sportster XL883 and XL1200, the Yamaha Road Star 1600 and 1700, the Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic, and Ducati 900-series models. Foam shims are included in the box to give you a tight, rattle-free fit even if the case sits slightly smaller than your OEM tray.
Now With Built-In BMS Protection
Every LFM24A3-BS12 includes Shorai's built-in Battery Management System. The BMS monitors your battery and disconnects the main terminals before a damaging over-discharge can occur. That's an extra layer of protection that the older LFX generation did not have on the label.
Beyond that, the LiFePO4 chemistry does a few things lead-acid simply cannot:
- No lead, no acid, and no explosive gases during charging
- Extremely low self-discharge rate, so it holds its charge through long storage periods
- Zero sulfation, which quietly kills most lead-acid batteries left sitting between seasons
- Can be mounted in any orientation except upside down, which is useful for tight or custom fitments
What You Need to Know About Charging
Your bike's stock charging system will work fine as long as it outputs between 13.1 and 15.2 volts. Standard lead-acid chargers with a peak output of 14.4V or below are compatible. Just avoid any charger with an automatic desulfation mode that cannot be disabled. Deltran Battery Tender chargers have been confirmed safe for use with Shorai batteries.
Cold Weather Starting
Down to about 20°F, most riders report normal starts on the first crank. In colder conditions, simply turn on your headlight or accessories for 30 seconds to a few minutes before cranking. That brief current flow warms the cells and delivers a noticeably stronger first start.
If you're ready to leave your heavy, sulfation-prone lead-acid battery behind for good, the Shorai LFM24A3-BS12 is the upgrade your bike deserves. Order today and get free shipping to the contiguous 48 states.
What's the difference between the "equivalent" and "Actual" amp hour capacity?
The manufacturer includes the "equivalent" (PbEq, "lead equivalent") rating to show a more apples-to-apples comparison between the lithium chemistry and the lead-acid battery that you're likely replacing.
The lead-acid capacity rating itself is based on a complete discharge at a low discharge rate. Under actual cranking conditions they will deliver considerably less than spec capacity. And because lead-acid batteries begin sulfating when only a small percentage of the capacity has been used, and their internal resistance rises as they are discharged, the actual capacity which can be used may be as little as 20% of the mfg. rating. Discharge in excess will not only damage the lead-acid battery, it may not allow proper starting as voltage sags.
For example, the Shorai LFM18 12V series have 6Ah cells internally. But, the cells are capable of 80% discharge without damage while still retaining more cranking power. As such, the usable capacity (or "reserve capacity") of an LFM18 12V battery is very close to 18Ah-rated lead acid batteries, while also providing superior cranking and huge weight reductions.
Cold Weather Performance Expectations
Down to about 20° Fahrenheit (-7°C) most users find that they can start normally on first crank. If your headlight comes on at key-ON, it is good for the batteries to flow some current before cranking in cold weather. The suggested headlight-on time before cranking depends on the temperature. If starting at 40°F/5°C, 30 seconds will help wake the battery and increase cranking performance. If at 0°F/-17°C, leave the lights on for 4~5 minutes before cranking. The result will be a better first crank, and longer battery life. If the engine fails to start on first crank, that first crank has warmed the battery, and the second attempt will be much stronger. Other accessories that can be turned on before cranking can also be used for this purpose, such as heated gear, radio, etc... Insuring that the battery is fully charged after storage also improves first-start performance in cold weather.

- Over-discharge (i.e. resting voltage allowed to fall below 12.8V/6.4V for Lfx 12V/6V types).
- Physical Damage to the battery occurring after purchase (impact, etc).
For custom vehicles if you have a stock motor pulled from another vehicle, then you can use our battery finder to select the battery that the motor came from as long as the starter gearing is the same. If you have any other questions, please give us a call and we will assist you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What bikes is the Shorai LFM24A3-BS12 compatible with?
A: The LFM24A3-BS12 is designed to replace any battery in the YB16-B group, covering a wide range of cruisers and larger-displacement bikes. Common applications include the Harley-Davidson Sportster XL883 and XL1200, Yamaha Road Star 1600 and 1700, Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic, and Ducati 900-series models. Always confirm your specific year, make, and model using Shorai's Battery Finder at shoraipower.com before purchasing.
What is the difference between the LFM24A3-BS12 and the old LFX24A3-BS12?
A: They are the same battery. In October 2024, Shorai officially renamed the LFX product line to LFM to better reflect the inclusion of a built-in Battery Management System, which Shorai began adding to all batteries starting in mid-2022. The physical dimensions, cell chemistry, capacity, and electrical specs are completely identical between the two. If you previously ordered an LFX24A3-BS12 and are reordering, the LFM24A3-BS12 is your direct replacement with no changes needed to your installation.
Can I use my existing lead-acid charger or battery tender with this battery?
A: In most cases, yes. Standard lead-acid chargers with a peak charge voltage of 14.4V or below are compatible. The key exception is any charger that includes an automatic desulfation mode that cannot be disabled, as this can overcharge and damage the lithium cells. Shorai has confirmed that Deltran Battery Tender products do not include a desulfation mode and are safe to use. For the best long-term results, a lithium-specific charger such as the Shorai BMS01 is recommended.
Is installation straightforward, or are there any steps I should know about before I start?
A: Installation is simple for most riders. Foam shims are included in the box to fill any gaps if the battery sits slightly smaller than your OEM tray. Confirm that your cables match the left-positive terminal orientation before you begin. One important step: charge the battery fully before its first use. Shorai ships batteries at approximately 30% charge to meet shipping regulations, so it will need a top-up before you ride.
