What are SLA batteries used for?

SLA batteries are used in many everyday and industrial applications. Common uses for a valve-regulated sealed lead acid battery include small appliances like alarms and heavier-duty professional usage from medical equipment and power chairs to emergency lighting, and industrial backup systems. Their reliable, maintenance-free design makes them ideal for both backup and deep cycle power needs in demanding environments.

What is the difference between an SLA battery and an AGM battery?

An SLA battery is a general term for a valve-regulated sealed lead acid battery. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) is a specific type of sealed lead acid battery. These batteries are designed so that the electrolyte is absorbed in fiberglass mats, making them spill-proof, maintenance-free, and ideal for high-performance applications like motorcycles and UPS systems.

Can I select a sealed lead acid battery with a different capacity?

When selecting a battery replacement, the voltage and dimensions of the replacement battery should match your original battery. The capacity doesn't need to be exact, but the voltage and dimensions do. For example, many UPS units use our 12 Volt, 7 Ah battery (Item # SLA-12V7-F2), which can be replaced with models up to 7.6 Ah in capacity. Our 12 Volt, 9 Ah battery (Item # SLA-12V9-F2) is also compatible, as it shares the same dimensions and voltage. Please know that the battery size may change with a higher capacity. Always make sure the voltage matches your original battery, and measure your original battery to ensure that it will fit the area where the battery will be installed.

How long does a rechargeable sealed lead acid battery last?

A rechargeable sealed lead acid battery typically lasts three to five years, depending on usage and storage conditions. Proper charging and avoiding deep discharges can extend its lifespan. To extend the battery's lifespan, use a compatible charger, disconnect the battery if stored for long periods, and recharge it every few months. Always store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.

What charger should I use for my SLA battery?

Some applications will charge the SLA battery automatically, like alarm or backup systems, so you shouldn't need to take the battery out and put it on a charger for these applications. Generally, though, you will want a charger that is ~10% of the capacity rating of the battery (at a 20-hour rate).

For example, if you wanted to charge a 12 volt, 20 Ah battery, you would select a 12 volt charger with a 2 amp charging output (20 x 0.10 = 2).
