Product Description
If you've been dealing with a heavy, sluggish lead-acid battery on your Honda GL1800 Gold Wing or a Harley-Davidson FLH Touring model, the Shorai LFM36A3-BS12 lithium iron powersport battery is the upgrade worth making. It delivers 540 cold cranking amps in a package that weighs under 5 lbs, dramatically lighter than the lead-acid battery occupying the same case footprint.
Lithium iron (LiFePO4) chemistry doesn't sulfate during storage, so you won't come back at the end of winter to a dead battery that won't hold a charge. It also maintains a higher voltage during cranking than an equivalent lead-acid battery, which means your engine sees a stronger, cleaner start every time you hit the button.
Built-In BMS Protection for Peace of Mind
Every LFM36A3-BS12 includes Shorai's Sentry Battery Management System built directly into the unit. If your bike's clock, GPS, or alarm system slowly draws down the battery while the vehicle is parked, the BMS monitors the voltage and automatically disconnects the terminals before permanent damage can occur. It's especially valuable for bikes and ATVs that sit for extended stretches, like an Arctic Cat 700 or 1000 4x4 in the off-season or a Harley-Davidson XLH that doesn't see winter miles.
Installing the LFM36A3-BS12
This battery ships at a low charge due to shipping regulations. Before your first installation, you should charge the battery for at least 6 amp-hours (e.g. 6 hours on a 1 amp charger). Ensure the battery is at full charge for the best performance.
Foam shims are included to fill any minor gaps in your OEM battery box, and cable connections can be made at either the top or side of the terminals for flexible installation.
Cold-Weather Starting Tips
Below 40°F, turn on your headlight, heated gear, or another accessory for about 30 seconds before cranking. At 0°F, allow 4 to 5 minutes. This warms up the cells, improves first-crank voltage, and extends battery life in cold climates. If the engine doesn't start on the first attempt, that crank itself will warm the battery, making the second attempt noticeably stronger.
Pair It with the Right Charger
To keep this battery in top shape during storage, we recommend the Battery Tender 022-0209-DL-WH 6V/12V 4-Amp Charger. It's confirmed lithium-compatible by Deltran and has no desulfation mode, making it a safe, reliable choice for maintaining your Shorai battery year-round.

What's the difference between the "equivalent" and "Actual" amp hour capacity?
The manufacturer includes the "equivalent" (PbEq, "lead equivalent") rating to show a more apples-to-apples comparison between the lithium chemistry and the lead-acid battery that you're likely replacing.
The lead-acid capacity rating itself is based on a complete discharge at a low discharge rate. Under actual cranking conditions they will deliver considerably less than spec capacity. And because lead-acid batteries begin sulfating when only a small percentage of the capacity has been used, and their internal resistance rises as they are discharged, the actual capacity which can be used may be as little as 20% of the mfg. rating. Discharge in excess will not only damage the lead-acid battery, it may not allow proper starting as voltage sags.
For example, the Shorai LFM18 12V series have 6Ah cells internally. But, the cells are capable of 80% discharge without damage while still retaining more cranking power. As such, the usable capacity (or "reserve capacity") of an LFM18 12V battery is very close to 18Ah-rated lead acid batteries, while also providing superior cranking and huge weight reductions.
Cold Weather Performance Expectations
Down to about 20° Fahrenheit (-7°C) most users find that they can start normally on first crank. If your headlight comes on at key-ON, it is good for the batteries to flow some current before cranking in cold weather. The suggested headlight-on time before cranking depends on the temperature. If starting at 40°F/5°C, 30 seconds will help wake the battery and increase cranking performance. If at 0°F/-17°C, leave the lights on for 4~5 minutes before cranking. The result will be a better first crank, and longer battery life. If the engine fails to start on first crank, that first crank has warmed the battery, and the second attempt will be much stronger. Other accessories that can be turned on before cranking can also be used for this purpose, such as heated gear, radio, etc... Insuring that the battery is fully charged after storage also improves first-start performance in cold weather.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the LFM36A3-BS12 and the LFX36A3-BS12?
A: In October 2024, Shorai officially updated their battery naming from LFX to LFM to clearly identify models equipped with an internal Battery Management System (BMS). The LFM36A3-BS12 and the LFX36A3-BS12 use the same LiFePO4 cells, share identical case dimensions, and carry the same electrical specifications. The performance and capacity are unchanged. If you've been searching for the LFX36A3-BS12, the LFM36A3-BS12 is the direct replacement you're looking for.
What motorcycles and powersport vehicles does the LFM36A3-BS12 fit?
A: This battery is a confirmed replacement for the Yuasa YHD-12H and the Shorai LFX36A3-BS12. Known applications include Honda GL1800 Gold Wing touring bikes, Harley-Davidson FL/FLH Touring series, and Arctic Cat 700 and 1000 4x4 ATVs, among others. Because fitment can vary by year and configuration, we always recommend verifying compatibility with Shorai's online application guide or contacting our team before ordering.
Can I use my existing battery charger or tender with the LFM36A3-BS12?
A: Most standard 12-volt chargers and battery tenders are compatible with this battery. The critical exception is any charger with an automatic desulfation, "repair," or reconditioning mode that cannot be turned off. That mode sends voltage pulses designed for lead-acid chemistry that can damage lithium cells. We recommend the Battery Tender 022-0209-DL-WH, which Deltran has confirmed carries no desulfation mode and is safe for use with Shorai lithium batteries.
How does the built-in BMS prevent battery damage?
A: The Sentry Battery Management System in the LFM36A3-BS12 continuously monitors battery voltage when your vehicle is parked. If residual electrical draw from your bike's clock, GPS, or alarm system pulls the voltage too low, the BMS automatically disconnects the battery terminals before the damage threshold is reached. This protects the cells from the kind of deep discharge that can permanently reduce a lithium battery's capacity or prevent it from accepting a charge at all.

Customer Reviews
I bought a 2008 goldwing with this battery already in it. Don't know how long it's been in the bike before I purchased it but I have had no problems with it cranking even on the coldest mornings in the 2 years I've owned this wing. Very well pleased so far and will consider purchasing another one.
I bought the battery for my motorcycle. It is smaller, lighter and way more powerful than the old battery.
